History of Spirit First Martial Arts

Spirit First Martial Arts was established in January 2010. The roots of SFMA’s teaching go back to the roots of Shorin Ryu.

After Sensei Lucie’s and Sensei Murray’s relocation to Australia, it was only natural to follow the tradition of ryu, the way they were taught by passing on the art they both study & love.

The name “Spirit First” has been chosen from an old saying by Gichin Funakoshi (known as the father of modern karate) “Spirit First, technique second”. We believe in this philosophy of teaching and therefore our name is to represent our teaching.

Dojo Mon

Traditionally known as the family crest, our "mon" has been designed to represent the style of karate we teach as well as the way of evolution of karate students.
